Gemma is a principal fatigue specialist for Qantas Airways. Gemma has been in the sleep field for over 15 years, having first become interested in sleep in 2006 when she undertook an honours research project in the recovery of sleep following sleep loss. Following this, she worked as a research assistant and a sleep technician before starting her PhD. She received her PhD in 2014 from the University of South Australia where she looked at how severe sleep loss and circadian disruption affects sleep and waking functions. She then undertook two postdoctoral fellowships in the USA before relocating to Newcastle in 2017 where she worked at the John Hunter Hospital. She joined Qantas in late 2022.
